Light Architecture: Luminous Walls

Luminous walls: From stained glass windows via modernist wallwashing to pixelated planes Luminous walls belong to the essential repertoire of qualitative lighting design. With light, spaces can be defined and reinterpreted. Illuminated walls allow us to provide orientation and to perceive the form and dimension of space. Further, their glow and play of brilliants could bestow a space with an impressing scenography. The timeline reveals different lighting approaches: From backlit stained glass windows for spiritual enlightenment in the gothic period to modernist uniform wallwashing. Contemporary examples will open the view for pixelated colour changing planes based on LED technology. The movie with an overview of international projects covers lighting methods and techniques for luminous walls and their visual appearance. With a perception-orientated design perspective the designer could use vertical illuminance to create bright spaces and thereby also contribute to sustainable lighting solutions. Upcoming lecture: PLDC – Professional Lighting Design Convention, Madrid 20.10.2011 The overview of international projects from architects like Antonio Gaudi, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, Jean Nouvel, Peter Zumthor, Raffael Moneo, Toyo Ito, Christoph Ingenhoven and Karim Rashid or light artists as Peter Kogler and Erwin Redl covers various lighting methods and techniques for luminous walls and their visual appearance. Checking Out The Unlimited Angels in Our Lives

Checking Out The Unlimited Angels in Our Lives

Article by Larry Banders

Not all people believe in angels but at times people claim to see them or feel their presence. Some think of them as superstitious lore, some as legends that are long gone and some are convinced that they walk the earth, guiding and watching over us. It is thought by many that angels are messengers, appearing on earth to protect us or to wreak destruction for those who do wrong. Most of us, however, don’t think of angels as destructive, but as protectors.

We have them in our cars, on our license plate holders, in our gardens and cavorting around picture frames and even on our personal bank checks. There are statues of angels in parks, angels spout water as fountains and they grace the facades of buildings from bygone eras. They are as much a part of our culture as pie and baseball!

Because angels symbolize love and kindness, many people find them fun and uplifting to collect. There are people that specialize their collections to a certain medium such as glass or pewter angels where others might want to collect angels playing musical instruments or only Christmas angels. Walking into the home of an angel wind chime collector can be a startling but musical experience! Collectors often put their angels all together in a display while others scatter theirs throughout their homes to bring good luck and love to every room of the house. Others enjoy sharing their hobbies and use their personal checks and address labels to depict their collection. Their home’s exterior might be decorated with stained glass art in the windows or a doormat with an angel on it.

Many people have claimed to actually see angels here on earth, saving their lives or those of others. Stories of accident victims who shouldn’t have survived or people trapped in ravines where they couldn’t be found are told and credit the angels with the rescues and survivals. In nearly every case a bystander or the victim saw some sort of bright light hovering over the site or spoke with a stranger that later could never be found. People have even received warning or reassuring phone calls about loved ones that do not show up on any electronic records, even when cell phones are used.

Other people feel the presence of angels in much different ways. There are stories of grief-stricken mourners who suddenly feel a presence of peace and feel so folded in the love of that presence that it’s almost like a physical embrace. They then know that their loved ones are at peace, their hearts are lightened and they can go on with their lives.

Many of us have angels in our lives, although they may not be what are usually thought of as angels. “Angel” is commonly used to describe people who act for the benefit of others with no thought of reward. A stranger may take it upon himself to clear your sidewalk of snow after you’ve had surgery or a family in dire financial straits may find gifts for the children and food on their porch. No one takes credit for these acts but they alter our lives. We often try to pass on that kindness to others when we can, a “pay it forward” concept that has been practiced for thousands of years before the movie of that same name.

The angels in our lives, human or supernatural, reshape our attitudes, brighten our days and come to our aid in time of need. These acts of goodness cannot help but change our lives and consequently, those around us. Our spiritual needs and accomplishments color every aspect of our everyday lives and angels, earthly or celestial, contribute to our spiritual health and help us along the path of happiness and harmony. It’s no wonder that people love angels! One doesn’t need to have a formal membership to a church to love the concept of angels and to enjoy talking about them, collecting them or even just thinking or reading about them.
